Things to Know Before You Go:

Planning Your Trip

Please remember that you are traveling to a remote wilderness island. Careful planning is required. Weather on Lake Superior can change rapidly, causing delays in hiking and transportation. We will do our best to adjust to the conditions and keep you informed through the Ranger Stations at Windigo and Rock Harbor.

Isle Royale Seaplanes now offers a one bedroom cabin for overnight rental at a rate of $89 per night. This cabin is located at our facility in Hancock and is designed for our clients who spend the night in Hancock the night before their flight to the island. Contact us for details and to reserve your space.

Luggage Guidelines

Each customer is limited to a total of 50 pounds, and when traveling as a group, no individual bag shall weigh more than 50 pounds. Please keep in mind when packing that no flammable gas or liquids are allowed on the plane.

Please consider the round dimensions of the aircraft when choosing your luggage. Our aircraft can hold all of your luggage, but the shape of the aircraft does not allow for large bags to fit inside. All customers carrying conventional luggage must bring no larger than carry-on size luggage. If it does not fit in an overhead bin of an airline plane, please choose a different type of bag.

Small to medium sized soft sided bags are best. This includes duffel-type bags and backpacks. If you are backpacking, larger backpacks are allowed. We accept external metal frame packs but prefer soft side. Large international sized luggage will absolutely not fit inside the plane, regardless of their weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the flight?

The flight typically takes 30-45 minutes.

How early should we arrive?

Please arrive 30 minutes prior your flight departure.

What time zone are we in?

Eastern Time Zone, in both Houghton and Isle Royale. Central Daylight Time in Grand Marais.

What do we do for parking at the seaplane base or airport?

Parking at the seaplane base in Houghton is $5 per day. Parking at the Cook County Airport in Grand Marais is free but because of renovations facilities will be limited.

What are the chances of weather impacting our flights?

Lake Superior presents challenging weather issues. When our flights are delayed or cancelled due to weather we do our best to get all of our passengers to their destinations when the weather improves. Sometimes that means adding extra flights to our schedule.

What if we have to change or cancel our reservations?

If you cancel your reservation more than 14 days prior to your flight you will receive a full refund. Within 14 days of your flight we do not offer a refund because it would be unlikely that we would be able to rebook your seats. At any time if you need to change your reservation, assuming we can accommodate the change, there is no additional charge.

How do we pay the National Park Service fee?

The user fee is paid before going to the park by going to https://pay.gov/public/form/start/67093923.

What constitutes a Round Trip?

Round trip is defined as flying from the Portage Canal Seaplane Base or the Cook County Airport to either of our 2 points on Isle Royale and back or vice-versa.

What do I need to know about intra-island trips?

Intra-island trips are special requests that we may not be able to accommodate due to scheduling.
